When we took our first set of Kunekune pigs to the butcher, our hanging weights ranged from 100lb-160lb. With Kunekune meat selling at around $6 a pound on average, that made the cost to our customers come to $600-$960 for a whole pig. Supporting a large family ourselves, we realize that $960 is a big chunk of money to pay all at once. We wanted to come up with a way to make filling your freezer with pork a little easier to swallow. We think the plan we came up with is not only going to make it easier for you to get a freezer full of pork, but also give you a fun opportunity to experience a little taste of farm life!
Here’s how it will work:
You pay $40 a month from October 2024 to September 2024. That will total to $480. The pigs will go to the butcher in October 2025. When the butcher calls us with your pig’s hanging weight, we will let you know what the balance minus the $480 you have already paid will be. This allows you to spread out payments a bit so that less is due on harvest day.
You get to pick a piglet either in person or from pictures that will be your pig. You will get to name that pig and get updates on how she is doing throughout the year of her growing. You can come visit your pig on the farm and even bring them food scraps throughout the year if you want to! We will have various contests ranging from best name, to the most pumpkins collected to feed them at the end of the fall, to highest weight of food scraps brought in a month to the herd. When it is time to go to the butcher, we will have a gathering thanking God for the provision of these pigs and acknowledging the sacrifice it takes to sustain humans. We feel that being connected to your food sources and understanding where food comes from is of utmost importance in healing the broken food system that our country has created. These pigs will live their best life enjoying life and being pigs.
After the pigs return from the butcher ready for your freezer, we will provide information with recipes, how to cook different cuts, and instructions for rendering lard (if you want your fat). We also will always welcome any questions that you have during or after the process!

FAQ
- Can I just buy half a pig?
Yes! You can find a friend to buy the other half of your pig or we can match you up with someone else wanting half a pig. If you are getting half a pig, your price is $20 a month.
- Can I pay more than $40 a month to have even less due at the end?
Yes! However, we would like to not collect any more than $600 total before we get the hanging weights in case the pig is on the smaller size. We don’t want you to be overpaying all year
- Do I have to come to the farm?
No, it is not required that you ever come to the farm and meet your pig in person. If that is not your jam, no problem! She’ll get plenty of attention from us!
- Do I have to participate in the contests?
No. Again, this is something that we are doing just for fun, but you should know, there will be prizes!
